While there are many different plaid scarves out there, we’re going to focus on one type that we really think you should try: An oversized plaid blanket scarf. It’s basically exactly what it sounds like: A big, cozy blanket that you can wear as a scarf. Typically, this is a bigger trend in women’s fashion, but it can look great on men as well.

History of Plaid?

Have you ever asked yourself where this pattern comes from? Plaid seems like an old, timeless textile pattern, and that’s exactly what it is. That being said, you might be surprised when learn just how far this pattern reaches back into our history.

If you have Scottish roots, you probably already know that the Scots are credited with inventing the plaid pattern. Real Scots know that “plaid” isn’t actually the real name for the pattern, and the crisscrossing textile weave is in fact called “Tartan.”

Plaid, on the other hand, is actually the correct word for the actual clothing onto which the Tartan pattern can be found. Tartan has incredibly ancient roots, and one of the earliest examples was found in central Asia dating back almost 3,000 years. Back in the day, the Scots use Tartan blankets and would drape these blankets over one shoulder.

Plaid as we know it today emerged in Scotland in the early 1700s. As the blankets made their way to the “New World” of America, the settlers began to use the word “plaid” interchangeably with Tartan, to the point where the two terms grew to have the same meaning.

In the 1800s, plaid became widespread across the new world, including the lands of Canada. Lumberjacks, pioneers, and cowboys all wore this pattern proudly. In fact, it was seen as quite fancy, seeing as most other fabrics had barely any patterns at this time.

In addition, Plaid blankets and fabrics made their way into the hands of Native Americans during this period. There’s even an unconfirmed story about a legendary Scotsman called Jock McCluskey who met with Natives and traded his plaid textiles for animal pelts. This was in fact the famous red and black “Buffalo plaid” that is synonymous with Jock’s MacGregor clan.

In the 20th century, plaid became much more mainstream, and for the first time, it became acceptable for a woman to wear a plaid shirt. Later, plaid became a must-have for any self-respecting punk in the height of that movement. The pattern resurfaced once again during the popularity of “Grunge” music in the 90s when Nirvana was one of the most popular bands in the world.

Fast forward to today, and plaid is just as popular as it ever was. These days, plaid is especially “in” because of the 90s-influence on current fashion trends. That being said, we’re sure that plaid will still be just as fashionable decades from now.

This is one of the best reasons to invest in a plaid piece for your wardrobe: The pattern is completely timeless. While other patterns and trends might come and go, plaid is clearly here to stay.
