Little Rock Weekend: May 9-12 Posted by: Melissa Tucker | 0 Comments

May just won’t quit. It’s relentless with things to do. Firstly, there’s the annual Queer Prom on Saturday. We know you’ll be there, but don’t stop reading because this weekend also includes Mother’s Day, so you better make plans to take care of the most important woman in your life. The one who birthed you, rocked you to sleep even when you were a terrible brat all day, cherished your crappy daycare artwork and will always love you no matter what. Well, that was a weird tangent. Let’s get into this Little Rock weekend.

Thursday
James and the Giant Peach Adult Night
Fun fact about this faceless events writer: When I was a tween, my favorite author was Roald Dahl. I read everything he wrote, including James and the Giant Peach. Needless to say, I’m fairly excited about the opportunity to drink peach cocktails in his honor, even if indirectly. The Arkansas Arts Center will host a Giant Peaches and Fuzzy Navels party with live music and a performance of the play beginning at 8 p.m. Admission is $12 for nonmembers and $10 for members of the Arts Center. Ages 21 and up, naturally.

Thursday
Taste of the Rock, River Market pavilions
Where else can you eat at 34 restaurants in one night? Get samples of some area dining establishments at Taste of the Rock. It’s like speed dating for your taste buds but with far less fear of rejection. Click for a full list of the night’s delicious suitors. It’s $15 in advance and $20 at the gate and will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the River Market.

Thursday and Friday
Thick Syrup Records is 7 years old and it’s time to celebrate. Expect two nights of music at White Water Tavern beginning today at 9:30 p.m. with performances by Ginsu Wives, Hamburguesa and Bloodless Cooties. Tomorrow night, amplifiers crank up at 10 p.m. with Bryan Frazier, Brother Andy and His Big Dam Mouth and Richie.

Saturday
Queer Prom, Dreamland Ballroom
Stop pretending. We know you’ll be there.

Saturday
Jason Aldean, Verizon Arena
Anyone not cool enough to know about Queer Prom will likely be found inside Verizon Arena, listening to the sounds of country singer Jason Aldean. Opening the show will be Jake Owen, Thomas Rhett and Dee Jay Silver. Show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets around $40.

Saturday
Wild Wines at Little Rock Zoo
Haven’t you always wanted to get a little tipsy and see a monkey? I know, right? It’s the premise of every dude flick these days, and you can live out that fantasy (sorta) on Saturday during Wild Wines at the Zoo. You’ll start out with samples of foods from swank places like 1620 Savoy and Cache Restaurant paired with hand-picked wine selections from sommelier from Jonathan Looney, O’Looney’s Wine and Liquor. Then, we’re assuming the monkeys will dance to the infectious sounds of the Big John Miller Band. Tickets $50 per person. Ages 21 and up. Wear comfy shoes, ladies.

Sunday
Strawberry Festival, Bernice Garden
Remember last spring when you bit into a fresh Arkansas strawberry and thought you could die a happy, juice-stained person? It’s that time again. Get this annual delicacy while it lasts and treat mom to it at the same time during Sunday’s Mother’s Day Strawberry Festival at Bernice Garden from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free, but bring cash for the berries.
