Things You'll Find In Any Southern Home Posted by: Aaron Stearns | 9 Comments

While there are just as many different kinds of homes in the South as there are Southerners, there are some things that are common to all of us. Here are a few of things that you are certain to find in almost all Southern homes.

Floors:

Authentic large oversized cowhide rugs are a great floor covering that provides a touch of rustic decor along with functional purpose.  It's not good to overdue the cowhide theme, but a cowhide rug properly placed ads a touch of authenticity to any room.

GREAT BUY: LARGE AUTHENTIC COWHIDE RUG (6'x 7')   $187

Outside:

Porch with wicker chairs, porch swing, and overhead fan to keep the mosquitos from landing. Citronella candles. And flowering bushes and trees: crepe myrtles are a favorite.

Kitchen:

We like a touch of reclaimed wood in our Kitchen.  Whether it is reclaimed wine barrel, bourbon barrel, or rustic barnwood, the character of the wood always breaks up the monotony of typical kitchen surfaces.  And of course, what respectable southern kitchen doesn't have a rotating Lazy Susan.

The more Mason jars, the better (for homemade jams, sweet tea, herb gardens and catching lightning bugs). The “good silver” used on holidays that has to be polished once a week. And at least one set of cocktail glasses for when company comes over, which is often.

Bedroom and Bathroom:

Handmade quilt usually passed down in the family. Monogrammed anything—towel, sweatshirt, hairbrush, necklace. And, of course, college football memorabilia.

Family Room:

Picture frames and accessories made from reclaimed barnwood. Framed maps and flags. A cowhide rug. And a dog bed just as nice as any other bed in the house.

A ton of Tupperware. The good stuff. Some of it was probably Granny’s.

Where’s the pitcher of sweet tea or lemonade?

What, no iron skillet? Bottle of bourbon, if only for “medicinal purposes?” And a deviled egg plate or two? And I’ll guarantee there are several cans of cream of mushroom soup in any kitchen in the South.

From a true Southerner— never say always, every, any or never…. Or as my momma said neva ;)

Any southern woman worth her salt know and has more than one deviled egg plate. That was the first thing I thought of, but Mary beat me to it, lol.

I have every thing mentioned in your article, Things You’ll Find in Any Southern Home. I’m not from the south. I’m in Idaho. All the items you mentioned are in pretty much in any Idaho home.

A deviled egg plate! My husband (Yankee heathen that he is) had never seen one until one of our wedding showers!
