Manhattan was created in the 1880s by a bartender at the Manhattan Club. It was originally made with American whiskey, which became known as the "Manhattan cocktail". It is one of the most popular cocktails in the world with different variations found everywhere from Japan to Norway to New Orleans.

Crushed ice
1 ounce sweet Vermouth
2½ ounces rye whiskey
1 tsp Angostura bitters
1 maraschino cherry
Recipe
1. Chill a cocktail glass.
2. Fill a mixing glass with ice. Add the Vermouth, whiskey, and bitters. Stir.
3. Strain into the chilled cocktail glass.
4. Garnish with the cherry.
