The White Rum Smash is a cocktail with a strong history and reputation. It was first created by the famous Nassau-based rum company, Fernandes Distillers Limited, in 2000.
The Fernandes Distillers Limited produced one of the best-selling rums in The Bahamas and wanted to expand their distribution into America. Their strategy was to produce a more affordable white rum that would be very smooth and easy on the palette, which would be appealing to Americans. They created this new white rum called “Fernandes Platinum” and they produced this very popular cocktail around the same time as a way to promote it.
2 ounces white rum
1 ounce elderflower liqueur
3 lemon wedges
2 ounces tonic water
Lemon wheel to garnish
1. In a cocktail shaker, muddle the lemon wedges.
2. Add ice, rum, and elderflower liqueur.
3. Shake to chill.
4. Strain into rocks glass filled with fresh ice. Top with the tonic water.
5. Garnish with lemon wheel.
